Bytedance intern project
OVERVIEW
During the summer of 2021, I had a 14-week internship with the Xigua Video team located in Beijing, China. Xigua Video is a Chinese online video-sharing platform owned by ByteDance.
I worked as an UX designer for the video editing tool embedded in Xigua Video, participating in user experience analysis, requirements analysis, User Flow design, and final design delivery. I collaborated with product managers and front-end developers to launch new versions of the video editing tool, which allows non-professional video creators to create higher quality videos at a lower learning cost.
Achievement
-Enhanced the inclusive design system, improving dark mode visibility and reducing user feedback on unclear display elements by 21%.
-Contributed to the team’s Good Design Award 2022 win by delivering scalable, research-informed visual and interaction design improvements.

Final Design
One of the most rewarding projects I worked on during my internship at Xigua Video was improving the inclusive design of the video editing software. I noticed that the existing interface posed challenges for older users due to small, fixed text and low legibility. To address this, I redesigned the editing tool’s components to support adjustable font sizes, making the interface more accessible and comfortable for a wider range of users.
Process
At the start of my internship, I decided to prioritize understanding our user demographics to swiftly acquaint myself with the product. During the course of my user research, I discovered that the proportion of older individuals is significantly higher when compared to other video platforms.

Xigua Video introduced a dark mode to reduce visual fatigue, but the high-contrast primary color caused discomfort, especially for older users. I took the initiative to readjust the theme color, lowering its saturation to create a more comfortable visual experience that allows users to edit for longer periods without strain.

The previous editing interface lacked responsiveness—its dense information layout and complex functionality didn’t adapt when users changed the font size. Within a limited timeframe, I prioritized optimizing the most frequently used and essential components, while also establishing new adaptive design rules to ensure better scalability and accessibility across the interface.

The large-font mode project I worked on during my internship was part of Xigua Video’s broader inclusive design initiative, which later won the Good Design Award. Our team’s mission was to provide diverse audio-visual entertainment that meets the needs of different users, continuously expanding our offerings while staying true to Xigua’s vision of “lighting up the curiosity about life.”
